Understanding About Cholesterol

Everyone tries to take care in their health these days, and this is highly in response to the fact of obesity and other such health problems which are truly becoming an epidemic in the world of today. It is important to understand about something such as cholesterol, because typically when people hear the word cholesterol, they automatically assume that it is bad; however, cholesterol can be both good and bad.

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol can be both good and bad, and this is why it is so very important to learn what cholesterol is, and how it affects your health, as well as what you can do in regards to treatment if the need be. There are basically two different types of cholesterol, which are LDL and HDL.

LDL is considered as being the bad form of cholesterol, in that when too much of it circulates in a person's blood, it can slowly build up on the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain, and as well, together with other substances it is able to form plaque in the body, which is a thick, hard deposit that can clog these arteries; this is a condition which is known as atherosclerosis.

Then there is HDL, which is considered as being the good form of cholesterol, and this is because a high level of it seems to protect against heart attacks in people, and in fact, a low level of HDL levels in a person's body will in fact increase the risk of them having a heart attack.

There is also another factor which must be brought into this discussion, and that is in regards to triglyceride, which is a form of fat that comes from food and which is also made in your body. The reason that it is involved in this particular subject matter is because people with high triglycerides often have a high total cholesterol, a high LDL cholesterol and a low HDL cholesterol level.

It is extremely important for everyone to get all of these levels checked regularly, in order to make sure that they are healthy and fit. Cholesterol is a major part of everyone's health, and it is important to find out whether you have too much of the bad stuff, too little of the good stuff, both, or if you are simply healthy and do not need to worry about it.

Also remember that these levels can change dramatically quickly, and so just because you got yourself checked out a little while ago that does not mean that you are still healthy, which is why it is so important to get regular checkups.
